I was born in Cassia, a small town in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. I graduated in Journalism, but before getting a job in the area I went to London and worked as a waiter for one year. When I got back to Brazil, I got a job as a reporter in a popular newspaper in São Paulo. Long hours, weekend shifts and boring as hell. I wasn't happy with that, and this made me try photography. I studied under Brazilian master Carlos Moreira for one year in 2009, and this experience changed my life. I was very inspired by his work and philosophy and by masters of color and light such as Harry Gruyaert, Alex Webb and Gueorgui Pinkassov. I took to the streets to photograph. I learned São Paulo shortcuts, and I enjoyed the idea of doing something just to please myself when everybody else was rushing to work. I've never stopped since then. I photograph every day, at home or on the streets. It's very hard for me to stay in if the light is good outside. Light and reflections play an important role in what I do, but I'm even more inspired by other people's lives. If I had to point out the main theme of my work, I'd say it's the human condition in urban spaces.
In 2014, I moved to Brasília, which is a very challenging city for street photography. After some months I realized that the central Bus Station (Rodoviária) was an oasis of chaos in the city. I've been dedicating myself to photographing it since 2015. This project won a category of Pictures of the Year Latam in 2017 and was exhibited at the Centro de Fotografía de Montevideo in 2018, and at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition (La Biennale di Venezia) in 2021 . It also led me to publish my first book, Maximum Shadow Minimal Light, with Austrian publisher Edition Lammerhuber. It was released with a solo show at Freelens Galerie in Hamburg in 2019. In 2022, my "Liquid Series" project was shown in a solo show at Galeria Fiesp in São Paulo. The same project has been nominated for Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2023.
In the past few years, I've been teaching workshops in different countries and I've also launched an online course with Domestika, Introduction to Street Photography. I believe that under certain lights, nothing looks ordinary. I never get bored if I have my camera on me, and photography has been my way of knowing myself and the world, and also of connecting with people.
